Glamour + Competition

I have 'pulled myself together'.

I'm dealing with the facial disfigurement by growing a beard. It's all going to be fine.

I'm shopping too. I'm going to be signing books soon, so I thought I'd buy a new nib for my fountain pen. And some ink. Shopping for bottles of ink is always really fun. It isn't like buying shoes.

I do it online. It would be so much better if there were a shop, dimly lit, with rows and rows of little glass bottles lined up like medicine in an old fashioned chemist's.

Here is the page of possible ink colours.

I wanted an ink to co-ordinate with the cover of the book. Because I am feeble and shallow. I can worry for a long time about the exact right colour, and what kind of message scented ink will say about me, and whether I will smudge the ink on the inside of the cover, and all kinds of other, similarly feeble things.

It is called displacement and projection and substitute anxiety.

The first person who guesses which colour I chose can have a free copy of the novel, posted to them when I get my box of author copies, which should be soon. Put your guess as a comment. When my ink arrives in the post, I will post a picture so you know, despite my occupation and reputation, I am not lying.

  1. Hey Jenn, I think it is Private Reserve Chocolat.

I spent this afternoon oggling the ink colours, I love ink so much. Looking at the cover - looking at the ink - looking at the cover - looking at the ink etc.

    Yep Private Reserve Chocolat :-)

  2. Diamine Monaco Red.

The names of those inks are poetry. I want to be a colour namer.

  3. They are fantastic, aren't they?

I especially like the ones named after food, although I have got ink my mouth once (not deliberate) and it was not tasty.

Here's an interesting fact for you: you can't take fountain pens into a prison, because the sharp nip (of some of them - I use a broad, stumpy one) and the liquid ink (not like gooey greasy biro ink) can be used for home-made tattoos.

  4. Noodlers Red-Black. As I know how it feels.

  5. Excellent choices, excellent choices ladies.

I don't expect to get the parcels of ink and author copies until next week, so there's plenty of time for new entries.

And in the case of a tie, the earliest answer wins, or I may make you fight it out, Northern Pub Brawl style, depending on my mood.

  6. Noodlers Baystate Cape Cod Cranberry.

Hats off to the person who scribbled and scanned all those scribbles and scans of ink.

  7. From the Noodlers website:

The ink with the catfish on the label symbolizes a southern sport that attempts to equalize the struggle between man and animal in the quest for a sense of fair play — and thus a fair price.

  8. love the name Noodlers - I want to work for them. "What does she do for a living?" "Oh, she's something big in Noodlers!!"

I want you to have gone for Noodlers Eternal (Bullet Proof) Black, but my real guess is Diamande Saddle Brown.

I'll kick myslef it it really is Noodlers Eternal wont I!

  10. Diamine Cerise - it matches exactly your name on the cover.

Very pretty. Never looked at ink samples before, can quite see how you get drawn in. Oh for a little Penhaligon's style stationer with all the bottles and blotters and leather desks...

  11. I'm wondering about Noodlers Widow Maker - not necessarily because it matches the book, but because I can't work out why you'd name an ink colour after a heart condition.

  12. Private Reserve Black Cherry.

  13. My Choice
    Private Reserve Arabian Rose
The colour matches the book cover,
and would be a good description of the character in the book.

  14. Someone else guessed my first choice so I'm going with:

    TWD Saddle Brown

  15. Private Reserve Ebony Green

  16. There are too many to choose from...

My favourite is perhaps Herbin Bleu Myosotis or Herbin Bleu Pervenche

although I think you'll go for something more like Rohrer and Klingner Fernambuk

    I dunno

    I can't do this

  17. I think you'd ponder momentarily the Noodler's Eternal Fox, but then go for Private Reserve Orange Crush.

  18. Interesting choices, blogging friends.

Green, Trilby? Now, I know you know how much I love green ink - but that's a brave, not-following the herd kind of choice.

Will it pay off? Work in your favour?

    Only time will tell!

  19. I'm going to go for Noodlers Ottoman Rose. It's a tough one though.

  20. Most of the ones I liked I've already gone, so I'll go for Herbin Terracotta.

I need to start ink shopping, it's a lot of fun!

  21. Jenn this contest in fantastic. Do I get extra consideration due to the fact that I am 5 hours behind you all? What if I missed winning by 5 hours because of an unfair time difference???

OK, so here is my deductive reasoning behind your choice: At first you would have wanted to go with Noodlers Red Black because it would complement your cover wonderfully, but you would have decided against it because it is only a semi-permanent ink and you would have feared your sig rubbing away forever. The next obvious choice would have been Noodlers Widow Maker ( a personal favorite of mine) or the wonderfully named Visconti van Gogh Burgundy Red (in the plastic bottle which would reduce possible breakage and also be Skye proof)- two very similar colors. However, I believe that the ink you have chosen to sign your book with is: "Noodlers Empire Red" because it is both permanent and waterproof which means that your sig would live on and you would not have to worry about smearing due to nervous, sweaty hands or joyous tears or more to the point, the accidental sloshing of your drinkie-drink!

So my dear Watson, is it elementary???

  22. Brian - I'm impressed with your reasoning! Maybe there should be an extra point or two for that.

Now, the time difference shouldn't matter too much because no-one has picked your colour first, and if anyone picks it after you and you're both right, you can fight with weapons of your choice, and I'll give you a head start or something.

  23. I choose knitting needles as my weapon.

  24. When I said 'knit your way to the top' that is NOT what I meant.

    Bad!

  25. Hmm, it's difficult, there are so many similar inks...I'll go for:

    Diamine Saddle Brown

  26. Brilliant competiton Jenn! I think it is Visconti Burgundy Red.

You have just inspired me to rediscover fountain pens having neglected them since childhood!

  27. Oh I hate guessing because I get so crabby when I'm wrong. But I do keep going back to that link just to peek. I want to be the person who makes those little scribble samples.

    ReplyDelete
  28. I'd like to do that too. I imagine someone has a really soft paintbrush just for the purpose.

Keep guessing! I don't expect the parcel for another few days yet!

  29. What a great competition Jenn! I am going to say Noodlers Nightshade. I like the way it rolls off my tongue.

  30. Diamine Claret. For sure!
    Congrats on the book.

  31. Herbin Bouquet dAntan. Lovely colour!

    ReplyDelete
  32. Diamine Brilliant Red methinks!

    ReplyDelete
  33. I would have gone for Diamine Mediterranean!

  34. Pah. I can't get the inky-page to load, so I'm improvising here.

I think that Ms Jenn will choose a dense, dark inky colour which matches her soul and her book's inner secrets. Perhaps a deep, dark blue, as velvet as the night; or maybe a rich, resonating red, the better to edit us all with.

No matter which colour she chooses I wish her all the very best with her book. She's a fabulous writer and I hope that she does very well indeed, regardless of her choice of ink.
